NATO

NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, is an intergovernmental military alliance established in 1949. The primary purpose of NATO is to ensure the collective defense of its member states against aggression, particularly in the context of the Cold War. The organization operates on the principle of collective security, meaning that an armed attack against one or more members is considered an attack against all members. NATO was originally formed by twelve countries, including the United States, Canada, and several Western European nations, but has since expanded to include 31 member countries as of 2023.

NATO also engages in various cooperative security efforts, crisis management, and military exercises to enhance the security of its members. While defense is its primary focus, NATO also addresses broader security issues, including cyber defense, counter-terrorism, and crisis response operations. The organization is based in Brussels, Belgium, and operates under a unified command structure, with member states contributing military capabilities and resources to fulfill its objectives.
